Oven Repair Guide

Why Is My Oven Tripping the Power?

An oven that is tripping the power switches off the earth leakage unit or a breaker on the DB board. This guide covers the difference, the causes, the safe checks and the faults for a technician.

Quick answer

An oven or stove that trips the power usually has an element with failed insulation that leaks current to earth. Moisture after cleaning is next. You can let the oven dry and note which function trips. Wiring, plate, switch, thermostat, fan motor and isolator faults need a technician. Do not keep resetting.

What does it mean when an oven is tripping the power?

An oven that is tripping the power has a fault that a device on the DB board has detected. The earth leakage unit trips when current leaks to earth, and cuts several circuits at once. A circuit breaker trips on overload or a short circuit, and cuts only its own circuit.

  • Earth leakage trips: a part leaks to earth or is damp.
  • Stove breaker trips: the circuit is overloaded or shorted.

Common causes of an oven tripping the earth leakage or breaker

An oven tripping the earth leakage or breaker most often has a leaking element. You can check the first two causes.

  1. 1

Moisture after cleaning or long disuse

    You can check this

Element insulation absorbs moisture when an oven stands unused, and cleaning pushes water into switches and terminals. The earth leakage trips soon after switch-on. Leave the oven off with the door open for a day.

  2. 2

    A shared or undersized circuit

    You can check this

A stove needs its own circuit and a correctly rated breaker. A shared or undersized circuit overloads when the oven and several plates run together. The breaker trips, not the earth leakage. An electrician corrects it.

  3. 3

An oven element is leaking to earth

    Technician

Each element has a heating wire packed in insulation inside a metal sheath. When the insulation breaks down, current leaks to the sheath. The power trips as the element heats. A technician replaces it.

  4. 4

    A stove plate is faulty

    Technician

A stove plate is also an element and fails the same way. The power trips when one particular plate is switched on. A technician replaces the plate. See stove plate not working.

  5. 5

The wiring or terminal block is damaged

    Technician

The terminal block joins the supply cable to the stove wiring. Heat hardens insulation, and loose terminals burn. The power trips at random, often with a burning smell. A technician or electrician repairs it.

  6. 6

The selector switch or thermostat has shorted

    Technician

The selector switch and thermostat carry the element current through small contacts. Burnt contacts or liquid behind the knobs cause a short. The power trips at one knob position. A technician replaces the part.

  7. 7

The fan motor or oven light is faulty

    Technician

A fan motor winding or a lamp holder can leak to earth. The power trips only on fan functions, or the moment the light comes on. A technician replaces the part.

  8. 8

    The isolator switch is faulty

    Technician

The wall isolator switch disconnects the stove from the supply. Worn contacts overheat, so the switch feels hot, looks discoloured or buzzes. An electrician replaces it.

What you can safely check yourself

  1. Note which device trippedSee whether the earth leakage, stove breaker or main switch is down.
  2. Switch off at the isolatorReset the DB board with the isolator off. If the power holds, the fault is in the stove.
  3. Let the oven dryAfter cleaning, leave the door open for 24 hours.
  4. Test one function at a timeTry the light, each oven function and each plate in turn.
  5. Record what tripsNote the function, then switch off at the isolator.

When to stop and call a technician

Stop and call us if

Do not keep resetting the earth leakage or breaker, because every reset puts power back onto the fault. Switch off at the isolator and stop if you smell burning or see sparks. Stop if liquid has run into the controls, or the power trips again after one reset. Do not open panels, terminals or wiring.

Still having trouble with your oven?

Our technician comes to your home, usually the same day. The R450 call-out falls away if you go ahead, and you get a fixed price in writing before any work starts.

How a technician diagnoses an oven tripping the power

  1. Confirms the sourceThe stove is isolated to prove it causes the trip.
  2. Tests insulation to earthAn insulation tester measures leakage from the live conductors to earth.
  3. Separates the partsEach element, plate and motor is disconnected in turn until the leak clears.
  4. Replaces and retestsThe faulty part is replaced and the test repeated before power is restored.

Why is my oven tripping the electric after cleaning?

An oven trips the electric after cleaning because water or cleaning fluid has reached a live part. The usual places are the element terminals, the switches and the lamp holder. Leave the door open for 24 hours with the isolator off. If it still trips once dry, it needs oven repair.

Why is my oven tripping when reaching temperature?

An oven that trips when reaching temperature usually has an element that leaks to earth only when hot. The insulation in a worn element breaks down further as it heats. Note the function selected. Bake points to the top or bottom element, grill to the grill element, and fan functions to the ring element or fan motor.

Is an oven that trips the power worth repairing?

Repair usually makes sense when

  • One element or plate is leaking to earth
  • Moisture caused the trip
  • The fault is a switch, thermostat or fan motor

Replacement is worth considering when

  • The internal wiring is burnt in several places
  • Several elements fail the insulation test
  • Parts are no longer available

Questions about oven faults

Why is my stove tripping the earth leakage?

A stove trips the earth leakage when current leaks from a live part to its earthed metal body. A plate or oven element with failed insulation is the usual cause. Moisture comes next.

Why is my stove tripping the main switch?

A stove trips the main switch when the total household load exceeds its rating. On some DB boards the main switch and earth leakage unit are one device, so an earth leak trips it.

Why is my oven tripping the electric when turned on?

An oven that trips the instant it is turned on has a short circuit or a heavy leak to earth. Damp parts, a shorted switch, a lamp holder or burnt wiring are the usual causes.

Is it safe to keep resetting a stove that is tripping the electricity?

No. The earth leakage unit and breaker trip to prevent electric shock and fire. Each reset sends power into the fault again. Reset once, then switch the stove off at the isolator.

Can I use the stove plates if the oven trips the power?

Only if the trip happens on an oven function alone. Leave the oven knobs off. If the power trips at random or with every knob off, keep the stove off at the isolator.
